OUR STORY

First Avenue Christian Assembly began in
1927 when a handful of people began meeting
in homes for prayer. Like many other
Pentecostal churches, this church began as a
few people met to pray and seek more of a
pentecostal experience. After meeting in
homes for a short time they moved to Orange
Hall and eventually a hall above a shoe
store on Yale Road. From that visionary
group, the church was founded and Rev. James
Purse became the first pastor. The assembly
built its first “church” on the corner of
Second and Young in 1929.
As the church grew and that first facility
was no longer adequate, the church planned
for relocation. That facility was replaced
in 1971 (dedicated Oct. 31, 1971) by the
building at
46336 First Ave
under the leadership of Pastor Elmer Martin. In
1974, the garden Villa, located adjacent to
that property, was built. In 1975-76 there
was an influx of people desiring the
infilling of the Holy Spirit so they went to
two services. The ministry grew and
included an active bus ministry for the
Sunday School and in 1979, a Christian
School (until 1988).
In 1980, they purchased the land the present
site is on. Fifteen years later in 1995
there was a groundbreaking ceremony and
construction on a new facility began. The
building was dedicated on May 26, 1996.
Throughout First Avenue’s history, the
congregation has continually outgrown its
facilities. Our present church campus is
just a block or so east of the facilities
built in 1971 on the same street at 46510
First Avenue.
Today, First Avenue is made up of a group of
believers who are seeking to be contemporary
by meeting the unique needs of today’s
society. We are charismatic, seeking to be
open and obedient to the Holy Spirit of God
in ministry and outreach. We strive for
excellence in everything we do, believing
that God’s kingdom is worthy of nothing
short of our best!
